Must-Have Streetwear Items In Your Wardrobe

From the hipsters of New York to the skateboarders of California, the sneaker culture has inspired a casual, youthful style of dressing referred to as "streetwear fashion". So vital is this style of dress that many of today's international and iconic designers are creating styles and lines comprised of the latest and greatest streetwear items imaginable. Since emerging in the 1980s, it has become a force to be reckoned with as an iconic and distinctive genre. For urban youth with sports and musical preferences, it is contemporary yet stylish at a grassroots level.

Let's look at some of the items that, if you aspire to own an impressive streetwear wardrobe, are considered must-haves.

Headwear

Included in the headwear category are the following:

  • Bandannas
  • Dad hats/baseball caps
  • Beanies
  • Sneakers

With white being the preferred color, among footwear for the streetwear look, sneakers are an absolute. However, one more type of footwear that is considered both preferred and optional are ankle boots.

    Hoodies (Pullovers)

Those sporting the streetwear look would not be caught dead without, at the very least, one pullover hoodie. This will likely be a boyfriend sweatshirt/hoodie for young women.

    Jackets (Casual)

The style of jackets changes with fashion. What's going to be in tomorrow probably wasn't in today or yesterday. Right this very second, long wool jackets are in. By the time you finish reading this, that could change! Casual leather coats, wool duster coats, and denim jackets are also a good fit for streetwear.

For guys, a timeless, cool look remains the military style jacket. Also included in cool streetwear are biker jackets and bomber jackets.

    Joggers/Sweatpants

Much to the dismay of many older adults, this category includes baggy pants with a dropped crotch. Ladies, in place of droopy sweatpants, feel free to don your favorite leggings.

    Jeans

This is possibly the most inclusive category. To start off our bottom wear category, consider raw denim, dark blue jeans. Also included in your street style wardrobe should be a pair of jeans that are not only ripped but have been washed as many times as they can without completely falling apart. The more functional pockets you have on your pants, the better.

An additional staple in your streetwear wardrobe should be skinny jeans. This is one style that hasn't changed where this fashion is concerned. It was popular right from the get-go. These jeans, in a tapered style, have and probably always will have a place where streetwear fashion is concerned.

    T-Shirts

No streetwear outfit of any kind will be complete without a T-shirt. It's simply unimaginable. They can be printed or plain.

Acceptable on a printed T-shirt: graffiti, slogans, vibrantly colored artwork.

Included in this category are jackets over a tightfitting or baggy T-shirt. Either a long line T-shirt, going all the way down to the knees, or a short one are both allowable, depending on the look you're going for. Preferred colors where T-shirts are concerned are white, gray, and black.

Ladies, crop tops and tank tops fit into this category.
